Returning to a Place Where My Journey Changed Forever

Some moments in life come full circle.
Some moments in life come full circle.

Recently, I had the opportunity to visit the Palm Beach Youth Academy, a facility for juvenile offenders. And while its not the specific institution where my journey through the criminal justice system began more than three decades ago, it was a sobering reminder of when I took the wrong fork in the road. This time, however, I wasn't arriving as a teenager facing an uncertain future. I was invited back as a speaker to share my story with the young men currently housed there.

At fifteen years old, I made decisions that altered the course of my life. Those decisions ultimately led to me spending thirty-one years incarcerated. Standing outside the facility again brought back memories of fear, uncertainty, and the belief that my future had already been written.

Today, I know differently.

During my visit, I spoke openly with the youth about accountability, consequences, personal growth, and the importance of making choices that align with the future they want to create for themselves. I shared the realities of incarceration, the lessons I learned along the way, and the challenges of rebuilding life after release.

More importantly, I wanted them to understand that while mistakes can have lasting consequences, they do not have to define the rest of their lives. Every person has the ability to grow, change, and become something greater than their worst decision.

Being invited to speak at Palm Beach Youth Academy was both humbling and meaningful. It reminded me why I founded True Phoenix Media and why I continue to share my story. If my experiences can help even one young person make a better decision, choose a different path, or believe in the possibility of change, then the journey has purpose.

This was more than a speaking engagement. It was a reminder that redemption is real, transformation is possible, and no matter how far someone has fallen, there is always an opportunity to rise again.

The Phoenix is rising.
